Overview

Studies of lung histology and morphology play a key role in basic and translational research. The histologoy laboratory performs standard histology procedures including tissue processing, embedding, sectioning and staining for routine histology (H&E, AB-PAS, Elastica, Trichrome, Giemsa) and immunohistochemistry.  We also provide expertise in morphological assessment of native lung tissue and isolated pulmonary epithelial cells and morphometric analyses of lung tissue. Image analysis is performed using Olympus Cell-F and Visiopharm software.

The histology laboratory provides access to state-of-the-art instrumentation including a digital slide scanner (Hamamatsu, NanoZoomer S60) and gives guidance in experimental design and technical expertise to TLRC investigators and DZL collaborators.

Techniques

  • Tissue/cell processing and embedding, sectioning
  • Stainings: H&E, AB-PAS, Trichrome, Elastica, Giemsa
  • Optimization of staining methods for lung tissue-specific conditions
  • RNA/DNA isolation from paraffin-embedded sections
  • Immunohistochemistry using commercially available primary antibodies
  • Morphometric analyses
