Education and Training
Professor Mark O. Wielpütz is Principal Investigator at the Translational Lung Research Center Heidelberg (TLRC) and from 2012-2020 he was Head of the Junior Research Group "Structural and Functional Airway Imaging". In 2016 he became the Head of the Section Pulmonary Imaging at Heidelberg University Hospital. After completing his studies of human medicine at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, he received his doctorade and worked as a junior fellow at the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and as a research assistant at the DKFZ from 2009. He habilitated in radiology in 2016. In 2019, he has been appointed Associate Professor and also received a Masters Degree in Health Business Administration (MHBA).
Expertise
The aim of the doctors and scientists of his group is to investigate the mechanisms of development of common congenital or acquired chronic lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis (CF), COPD or pulmonary malignancy such as lung cancer.
The Junior Research Group "Structural and Functional Airway Imaing" is primarily concerned with the research of functional CT and MRI techniques in patients with chronic obstructive airway diseases such as cystic fibrosis.
Prizes and Awards
For his work on MRI of cystic fibrosis, Prof. Wielpütz received the Christiane Herzog Research Award from the Christiane Herzog Foundation and Mukovsizidose e.V., one of the highest endowed prizes for young researchers with € 50,000.
