DZL Researchers Contribute to European Initiative to Advance Lung Cancer Screening

|   News

Researchers from the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) are contributing their expertise to SOLACE+, a major European initiative aimed at improving access to high-quality lung cancer screening and accelerating the implementation of screening programs across Europe.

Launched in November 2026, SOLACE+ brings together 46 partners from 22 EU Member States and Norway. The three-year project, co-funded by the EU4Health Program, builds on the achievements of its predecessor, SOLACE, which screened more than 30,000 people across 11 countries. SOLACE+ aims to support the implementation of sustainable, equitable and high-quality lung cancer screening programs, with a particular emphasis on reaching high-risk populations and integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into screening workflows.

DZL Expertise Strengthens European Collaboration

Researchers from two DZL partner institutions, Heidelberg University Hospital at the TLRC and Hannover Medical School at BREATH, will contribute their expertise and resources to the European consortium. The Heidelberg team will co-lead centralized data management within the consortium and the analysis of how tobacco-related comorbidities are managed in the context of lung cancer screening. The team will also contribute to research on radiation exposure. The Hannover team will provide 1,200 low-dose computed tomography datasets acquired during the HANSE lung cancer screening pilot study, contributing valuable imaging data to the project.

Through these contributions, DZL researchers will help strengthen the evidence base for effective lung cancer screening and support the development of screening programs that can be implemented sustainably across European healthcare systems.
