Hans-Ulrich Kauczor, a radiologist by training has made significant contributions to the structural and functional imaging of the lung. He has developed technologies in computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), particularly proton MRI, for the purpose of improving diagnosis, monitoring therapy efficacy, and detecting comorbidities.

His team utilizes quantitative image-based biomarkers and image post-processing methods, including deep learning and artificial intelligence, to enhance disease detection and evaluation. Kauczor has also pioneered proton MRI of the lung with and without contrast agents, to improve the imaging of lung structure and ventilation. He conducted some landmark single and cohort studies that contributed significantly to the improvement of quantitative image analyses, particularly of inflammatory activity. These methods are being employed for the assessment of patients with various lung diseases such as COPD, fibrosis, COVID pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary hypertension, and lung cancer.
