Education and Expertise

Franziska Trudzinski is a consultant at the Thoraxklinik, University of Heidelberg. She started her training in the Department of Pneumology at Saarland University Hospital after graduating from FAU-Erlangen and TU-Munich. She obtained her specialist designation in internal medicine and pneumology in 2017, as well as additional qualifications in intensive care medicine and infectiology in 2020 and 2022. Her main research interests are in the field of chronic lung disease and intensive care medicine. In 2017 she received the Research Award "Intensive Care Medicine" of the German Society for Internal Intensive Care Medicine (DGIIN). In the context of her habilitation, which she completed in 2019, she investigated the "Chances and risks of interventional therapy procedures and intensified intensive care measures in patients with chronic lung diseases".

Lung Research - Projects

  1. COPD, identification of prognostic biomarkers and their interaction with lung function, comorbidities, and other factors, such as gender, in relation to disease progression.
  2. Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, disease course in interaction with therapy, comorbidities, risk factors.
  3. Intensive care, weaning Investigations of new models of care in respiratory medicine, PRiVENT intervention.

The PRiVENT intervention is a prospective, multicenter, mixed-methods intervention study with a parallel comparison group selected from insurance data from the Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse Baden-Württemberg (AOK-BW) and conducted in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, over 24 months. Four weaning centers serve 40 intensive care units, which are responsible for patient recruitment. The PRiVENT project aims to investigate the impact of early intervention by weaning specialists on the number of patients requiring long-term out-of-hospital IMV after hospitalization in an ICU. 

Additional objectives are:

- Reduce the number of ICU patients who are classified as weaning failures and are not readmitted to specialized centers.

- Early identification of patients who need specialized weaning therapy in non-specialized ICUs to optimize their treatment success

- Improve the quality of weaning therapy in non-specialized ICUs and, if necessary, transfer high-risk patients in a timely manner

- Raise public awareness about weaning therapy

- Estimating the costs associated with long-term invasive ventilation.

- Identify (additional) costs and savings associated with PRiVENT intervention.

- Assess patient quality of life during and after long-term invasive ventilation and estimate costs and savings associated with the impact of the intervention on patient quality of life.
